As Winter Approaches, Newlands Training Reminds Forestry and Arboricultural Professionals to Check Their Skills

With winter around the corner, leading land-based training provider, Newlands Training, wants to remind all professionals in the forestry and arboriculture industry to check that their skills and certificates are up-to-date. Managing Director Lesley Simpson urges all forestry and arboricultural workers to be sure of the following: • Is your equipment in good condition? Such as well-maintained chainsaws or good condition ropes and harness. • Does your protective clothing (PPE) reach the correct specification for the work you do? • Are you using all of the recommended PPE for your work? Do you have a current LOLER Certificate – 6 monthly checks for climbing and 12 monthly checks for rigging? When working with dangerous equipment and within hazardous environments, expert training is called for to ensure the health and safety of workers and others around. If your certification, PPE or equipment does not meet the standards required by the HSE, you not only risk serious injury to yourself and others, it could also affect your personal insurance. Lesley Simpson adds, “Maintaining your certification levels is of the upmost importance when you are working within this industry, if not just for yourself but for people around you as well. Taking an additional or a refresher course can make sure you are aware of developments within the industry, allowing you to carry out your job safely and correctly. A refresher course can also ensure you are competent with new and existing machinery and techniques, allowing you to provide the best service possible”. Newlands Training can provide tailored courses to refresh or upgrade certifications, enabling workers to adhere to necessary requirements.

Professional Tree Inspection Course

Dorset’s foremost land based training provider, Newlands Training, is pleased to add a course in Professional Tree Inspection to its range of Forestry and Arboricultural courses. This 3-day course is a rare opportunity to undertake this professionally recognised course that will enable its trainees to initially identify a range of defects in a variety of trees.  It will also provide them with the knowledge to specify and correctly record the necessary course of action. The course is designed for competent arboriculturists who already carry five years’ experience and wish to expand their knowledge to a further, more professional level. The course teaches trainees to recognise problems from the ground, by climbed inspection, or with the aid of a Mobile Elevated Working Platform (MEWP) at an advanced level.  Newlands Training’s instructors will enable trainees to record the inspection process and recommend the preferred remedial works, all within a defensible system. On successful completion of a competence-based assessment, trainees will be awarded a Lantra Awards certificate of training in Advanced Tree Inspection. Lesley Simpson, the training organiser of Newlands Training said, “This is a comprehensive course which pulls together previous training and experience.  Both will be needed before enjoying the Professional Tree Inspection course.” The next course will be running on October 5th/6th/7th at Unit 6 Enterprise Park, Piddlehinton near Dorchester.  If you wish to take part in this course, Newlands Training requests that you have had five years’ experience carrying out tree survey and inspection and carry an arboricultural qualification at level three.

Newlands Training to Increase Countryside Safety with Lantra Awards Course in Professional Tree Inspection

From June 2010 leading Dorset Arboriculture training provider, Newlands Training will be offering the rarely taught Lantra Awards Course in Professional Tree Inspection. This 3 day course aims to provide specific tree inspection training at an advanced level and is the follow-on qualification to basic tree inspection. Aimed at competent arboriculturist, the course will enable holders of the qualification to care for and manage trees professionally, making estates, green spaces and public gardens safer places to visit. ‘We have decided to run this course as there is a real need for advanced training in this area,’ said Lesley Simpson, Newlands Training Managing Director. 'Dorset is full of beautiful tree specimens which to the untrained eye may look perfect. Funghi can lurk in the internal areas of these huge trees, which if left untreated are accidents waiting to happen, especially in public places. The Lantra course will teach arboricultirists with basic training to identify and treat such trees, preventing the occurrence of unnecessary accidents.’ The basic course requirement is that trainees have at least a Level 3 arboricultural qualification before applying. The Lantra Awards Course in Tree Inspection provides training in how to specify necessary remedial works and record the inspection process. At the end of the course candidates will undertake a competence based assessment directly related to tree inspection. The course is not aimed at covering report writing; however it will involve a written exam, fungal identification and tree inspection. Tree climbing and use of MEWP will not be required during the course and prospective trainees should have an in-depth knowledge of plant and arboricultural science, including a thorough knowledge of wood decaying fungi, identification and interpretation of signs and symptoms of ill health and structural failure across a wide range of tree species and circumstances. Competence in tree inspection and survey is also a pre-requisite. For more information visit the Newlands Training website www.newlandstraining.com or contact Lesley Simpson on 01305 848454

Newlands Trains Volunteers For European Conservation Action (EuCAN)

Local land based training provider, Newlands Training, was recently involved in training a group of volunteers in brush cutting training and chainsaw training as part of the EuCAN 2010 programme. EuCAN is an exciting conservation project set up by West Dorset educational charity, The Kingcombe Trust, to enable people from the UK to contribute to wildlife conservation across Europe. The body is funded by the Leonardo da Vinci section of the EU Lifelong Learning Programme and is dedicated to encouraging engagement in conservation projects across Europe. The organisation has established partnerships with wildlife and orchard conservation organisations in five countries of the EU; France, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Belgium. This enables groups from the UK to travel by train, mini bus or boat (this is a no-fly operation) to work with these partners to carry out practical management tasks or species monitoring. (More...)

Newlands Training Turns Up The Heat With Two New Courses

Newlands Training, Dorset’s leading land based training providers, has added two new courses to its already extensive programme. The ‘Small Business Fire Training’ is the latest addition to the health & safety qualifications on offer. Whilst the ‘Certificate in Arboriculture’ course has been introduced after a stem of enquiries from customers. Both courses will be available from February 1st 2010. The ‘Small Business Fire Training Course’ is designed for small business owners with no facility for in house fire training and those with employers and employees who require ongoing fire training to conform to the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 RR(FS)0. The RR(FS)0 has replaced a host of fire safety legislation and now clearly identifies that it is the responsibility of every business owner to carry out a risk assessment and remove or reduce as much as possible any risks to people in the building from fire. ’We have received a number of requests for this course with more businesses realising that it’s their responsibility to address fire safety in the workplace, and we want to be able to service all training requirements, ’ commented Lesley Simpson, managing director, Newlands Training. Lasting 3 hours and designed for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 people the ‘Small Business Fire Training Course’ costs £60 + vat per delegate. Another addition to the portfolio of Newlands’ Training Courses is the ‘Certificate of Arboriculture’, again as a result of a string of enquiries. The course is designed for those people working in Arboriculture, in both the public and private sectors, to complement their training and experience. A spring board for those wanting to take the Professional Diploma in Arboriculture of The Royal Forestry Society (RFS) the course covers planting, chainsaw training, felling small trees and brushwood as compulsory elements. This year long course, taught one day a week from June 2010 has 10 places available and will cost £1,000.
